XVI General Chapter of the
Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts

The XVI General Chapter began on April 14, 2010 with a solemn concelebrated Mass in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows in Secondigliano, Italy. Delegates and elected representatives from all our communities around the world were in attendance to join in asking the guidance of the Holy Spirit as they looked forward to beginning the work of the Chapter. A general chapter is held every six years. The theme of this year’s Chapter was “In the Footsteps of Gaetano Errico.” The North American Delegation was represented by Fr. Malcolm MacLeod, M.SS.CC., Delegate, Fr. Peter DiTomasso, M.SS.CC. And Fr. Robert Malagesi, M.SS.CC.

After the opening Mass, the delegates moved to the St. Vincent Palotti Spiritual Center in Grottaferrata, Italy to begin the chapter sessions. Issues discussed included reflection on the charism of our founder, St. Gaetano and how it was manifested in the work and ministries of our Missionaries today. Included were reports from each region on their current status and endeavors for the future. General issues that affected all regions were discussed and amended.

Close to the completion of the Chapter on May 1, elections for the Superior General and his Council members proceeded with the following outcome:
     Superior General: Fr. Salvatore Izzo
     Vicar General: Fr. Antonio Palmiero
     Economer General: Fr. Angelo Terracciano
     Councilors: Fr. Vincenzo D’Antico and
                          Fr. M. Arokia Raj

Fr. Peter DiTomasso, who was attending a General Chapter for the first time, shared that in addition to the valuable work accomplished during his time at the Chapter, it was a most welcome opportunity to establish friendships with his Confreres from our communities around the world and learn of their ministries. He believed, for him, it was a true gift of the 2010 General Chapter.
