On August 22, 2020, after being delayed due to the pandemic, through the imposition of hands and the invocation of the Holy Spirit by His Excellency, the Most Reverend Ronald W. Gainer, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of the Diocese of Harrisburg, PA, ordained Bro. Norbert Suresh, MSSCC, our confrere from India, to the Holy Orders of the Diaconate in the Cathedral Parish of St. Patrick.
The word “Deacon” has its origin in the Greek words Diakonia meaning service and Diakonos translated as servant, minister. As a Deacon, Bro. Norbert will assist the priest at Holy Mass when he offers the invocations of the Penitential Rite, proclaims the Gospel and preaches the homily. He will receive the gifts and prepare the altar and distribute Holy communion and proclaim the dismissal of the assembly at the conclusion of the Holy Mass.
He will assist the priest outside of the Holy Mass when he administers the Sacrament of Baptism; brings Viaticum to the dying; presides over prayer services; officiates at wakes, funerals, and burial services; and acts as a witness to marriages. He will also assist in the spiritual formation of the people in his place of assignment.
As a minister of service, he will undertake ministries of charity in the name of his religious congregation the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (MSSCC). They include praying for and offering hope and consolation in visiting the sick in the hospitals or in their homes, those who are incarcerated and those home bound. He will also attend to the corporal needs of the poor bringing them relief from hunger and providing for their basic human needs.
We pray, through the intercession of our founder St. Gaetano Errico, and the Blessed Mother, that Bro. Norbert will grow spiritually to embrace his calling to the Religious Life and the Holy Priesthood in a spirit of humility and service working for the Glory of God and the salvation of souls.
