ST. GAETANO ERRICO ... A SAINT FOR OUR TIME!

The sun shone brightly in a perfectly clear blue sky as His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI presided over the canonization of four new saints on Sunday, October 12, 2008. Among them was Gaetano Errico, Founder of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts. It seemed so short a time, six years actually, since Pope John Paul II had beatified 51. Gaetano.

The overflow crowd in 51. Peter's Square cheered joyously as Pope Benedict spoke of St. Gaetano as a man dedicated to lifting up the poor, the abandoned and the spiritually afflicted. Speaking of 51. Gaetano, Pope Benedict said, "The street and the confessional were the privileged places of pastoral action for this new saint. How many wounds of the soul did he heal in this way!" But it was his example of compassion and caring for "neighbor" that was often mentioned by those attesting to his sanctity. It is a message for today, as the world struggles with division among countries, ideologies and people. The Missionaries around the world offer heartfelt thanksgiving to Almighty God for this blessing on their beloved Founder and their congregation.
